For an engagement shoot, choose makeup and hair close to what you imagine for your wedding, keep skin fresh and the look camera-ready, and review the photos afterwards. The shoot works as a free-flowing test run: you see what lasts, what photographs well and what to change before the big day.
An engagement shoot is the best rehearsal a bride can get: real light, a real camera, real hours of wear. Treat the makeup and hair as a preview of your wedding look and you will walk into the big day already knowing what works on you.
Why an engagement shoot is the perfect test run
An engagement shoot shows you how your makeup and hair behave in photographs, in real daylight and over several hours. A mirror at home cannot tell you that, and even a studio trial only goes so far.
I am a wedding photographer as well as a makeup artist, so I look at faces the way a camera does. Colour that seems soft in the bathroom can turn flat in overcast Danish light. Shimmer that feels subtle can pick up as shine in a flash. A shoot lets you see all of this in the finished pictures, with no pressure, because nobody is waiting at the altar.

How close should the look be to your wedding look?
Aim for roughly the same direction as the wedding, not a perfect copy. If you dream of a natural Nordic glow on the day, wear a natural Nordic glow for the shoot, and if you plan sleek modern glamour, try that.
It helps to decide what you are testing. Some ideas:
- Lip colour: a soft rose, a classic red or a barely-there balm
- Eye intensity: soft shimmer lids versus a defined, smoky edge
- Hair direction: loose romantic curls, a sleek bun or a relaxed bohemian style
- Finish: dewy skin versus a more matte, polished base
Pick one or two things to experiment with rather than changing everything. That makes the feedback much clearer afterwards.
Is an engagement shoot the same as a bridal makeup trial?
No. A bridal makeup trial is a dedicated session where we build and refine the look together in real light and on camera. An engagement shoot is a bonus second test, where the look has to survive an actual photoshoot.
Think of them as a pair. The trial is where we design, the shoot is where we road-test. If you book both, bring your favourite photos from the shoot to the final consultation and we can fine-tune from there. Trial sessions are available on request, so write to me and we will find a time.
Skin first: preparing for the camera
Camera-ready makeup begins with calm, hydrated skin. Keep your routine simple in the days before, avoid trying new strong products, and moisturise well so foundation sits smoothly.
A few habits that help:
- Drink water and sleep as well as you can the night before.
- Skip new facials or exfoliating treatments in the final days before the shoot.
- Apply moisturiser and a primer suited to your skin type before makeup.
- Bring lip balm, as lips look much better in close-ups when they are comfortable.
For a longer plan, see my bridal skincare timeline. An engagement shoot is also a handy checkpoint: if skin behaves well in photos now, you have a preview of how it will look at the wedding.
Hair that works for movement, wind and walking
Engagement shoots mean walking, laughing, turning and often wind, so choose a hairstyle that keeps its shape while it moves. Soft curls, a loose half-up style or a textured low bun are all good candidates.
Copenhagen weather can change within the hour, especially near the harbour, so a style with some structure and a flexible hold beats something fragile. Read my notes on makeup and hair in Danish weather for more detail. If you plan to wear a veil or flowers at the wedding, bring a similar accessory to the shoot so you can see how it sits. My post on veil and hair accessories goes deeper on that.
What to wear and bring
Wear an outfit that reflects the mood of your wedding, because colour and neckline affect how makeup reads. A white or ivory top will bounce light up onto the face, while a deep colour can make skin look warmer.

A small kit for the shoot makes a difference:
- Lipstick or tint you can reapply
- Blotting papers and a small powder
- A few hairpins and a travel-size hairspray
- Water and a snack, so you stay relaxed
I go into this more in my guide to the bridal touch-up kit, which also works for a shoot day.
How to review the photos and refine the wedding look
After the shoot, go through the pictures with a few simple questions, and write down your answers. This is where the test run pays off.
- Which photo do you love most, and what is it about the makeup or hair in it?
- Did anything look too heavy, too shiny or too pale?
- How did the makeup look at the beginning of the shoot versus the end?
- Did your hair hold its shape, or did you feel you needed to fix it?
Send me your favourites and notes. As both an artist and photographer I can usually tell quickly whether a tweak to base tone, lip depth or curl size will make the biggest difference.
Booking makeup and hair for your engagement shoot
I come to your home, hotel or location across Copenhagen, Greater Copenhagen and Zealand, in English or Danish. Engagement shoot sessions are available on request, and you can check the wedding-day prices on the packages section of my site.
The best way forward is to tell me your shoot date, location and the wedding look you are imagining, via the contact section. If you are still choosing an artist, my guide to choosing a bridal makeup artist in Copenhagen may help. Beauty that lasts as beautifully as the memories starts with a good rehearsal.
Quick questions
Should I wear my wedding makeup to my engagement shoot?
Wear a look in the same direction as your wedding makeup, not necessarily an exact copy. Test one or two ideas, such as lip colour or hair style, and review the photos afterwards.
Can an engagement shoot replace a bridal makeup trial?
It is better as a second test than a replacement. A trial is a dedicated session to design the look, and the shoot shows how that look holds up on camera over several hours.
Do you do makeup and hair for engagement photoshoots in Copenhagen?
Yes. I come to your home, hotel or location in Copenhagen, Greater Copenhagen and across Zealand. Engagement shoot sessions are on request, so contact me with your date and place.
What hairstyle is best for an engagement shoot?
Choose a style that holds when you move, such as soft curls, a loose half-up or a textured low bun. Bring a similar accessory to your wedding plan if you want to test it.
