A City Hall wedding in Copenhagen is romantic, intimate and wonderfully photogenic. The ceremony may be short, but the day around it is full: getting ready, the walk to the Rådhus, photographs on the steps and then an afternoon of wandering the city as a married couple.
What should I know about hair and makeup for a Københavns Rådhus wedding?
Plan the look for the whole day, not just the ceremony. A City Hall wedding is short, so most of the hours are spent getting ready and having portraits, and your hair and makeup need to keep up with all of it.
Copenhagen City Hall (Københavns Rådhus) is one of the city’s best-known places to marry, with a grand stone building, a tower and an inner courtyard that attract photographers. It is a lovely setting for classic, elegant looks, and equally for fresh, modern ones. I have a post on the Copenhagen bridal makeup guide if you would like the wider picture, and my Copenhagen page explains where I work.
How early should I start getting ready for a short ceremony?
Start a few hours before you need to leave, because the ceremony slot is fixed and the travel and photographs are not. A relaxed schedule is better than a rushed one, especially in the city.
Preparation starts a few hours before the ceremony, with time for breaks. I come to you, whether that is a hotel, an apartment or a venue close to the Rådhus, so you can dress, have a coffee and step out the door ready. If you are marrying early in the day, an earlier start may be needed, and early-morning starts are available on request. A good rule is to be finished with hair and makeup before you put on your dress, then leave a buffer of at least half an hour for the journey and for finding your way to the right entrance.
- Choose a hotel or home within an easy walk or short taxi ride of the Rådhus.
- Allow time for traffic, parking or a taxi queue in the centre of the city.
- Keep a small snack and water nearby, and eat before the makeup goes on.

Which makeup look suits a City Hall wedding?
A skin-first, refined look with soft definition suits the setting best. It photographs well in stone-and-daylight surroundings and does not feel overdone for a smaller ceremony.
The range is wide. A natural Nordic glow with soft eyes and a rosy lip is gorgeous and timeless. Others prefer a more defined, glamorous finish with a sharper eye and a stronger lip, which works well too. My role is to highlight your natural beauty rather than hide it. For ideas, my post on the Nordic bridal glow explains the approach, and photogenic bridal makeup covers what reads well on camera.
Because I am also a photographer, I know how a pale stone building, bright sky and white dress can bounce light back at your face. We test your look in real light at the trial session so there are no surprises.
Which hairstyle works best for a City Hall wedding?
Choose a style that is secure for stairs, wind and a lot of walking. Soft romantic curls, a sleek modern bun, a relaxed bohemian style and a timeless updo can all work beautifully.
A City Hall wedding often means a short veil or none at all, or a hat or hair accessory. That gives you more freedom to wear your hair as the star: a low chignon with a few soft strands, or polished waves pinned back on one side. If you are wearing a flower crown or a comb, we place it for the portraits too. For inspiration, see bridal hair trends. Courtyards and squares in the centre can be breezy, so I recommend a style with hidden pins and flexible hold.
How do I prepare for portraits around the city?
Keep a light touch-up kit and plan where you will stop. Portraits around Copenhagen might include the Rådhus steps, cobbled streets, Nyhavn or a park, and each location has its own light.
The wedding itself may last only a short while, and the rest of the day is yours. Many couples walk through the old streets, stop for a coffee, or take the photographs at the harbour. A few things help:
- Take blotting papers, a lipstick and a small pot of lip balm.
- Carry a few spare pins and a small comb.
- Check the wind direction before you stand in an open square.
- Take a break for water and a sit-down halfway through.
If you would like me to stay with you, an all-day touch-up service is available on request, so you can enjoy the day while your look stays fresh. Our guide to a bridal touch-up kit has the essentials if you prefer to go it alone.

What about Frederiksberg Rådhus and other civil venues?
The same approach works for any civil ceremony: build a look to last for hours and allow generous time to get there. Frederiksberg Rådhus and other town halls around Greater Copenhagen are popular too.
The ceremony length varies, so check the time you have been given and plan backwards from it. I travel across Greater Copenhagen and all of Zealand (see Greater Copenhagen), so your preparation can happen wherever suits you. If your plans are more private, read my guide to elopement makeup in Denmark.
Book your City Hall wedding look
I offer City Hall and elopement packages on request, tailored to your timings. The standard Bridal Makeup & Hair is €300, and you can see all options in the packages section. The process is simple: a consultation about your dress and vibe, a trial in real light and camera, then the wedding day, when I come to you. Beauty that lasts as beautifully as the memories.
