Bridal Hair & Makeup Trial: Why, When and What to Bring

Bride reading quietly in soft light, calm and ready before a bridal trial
The short answer

A bridal hair and makeup trial lets you test your look in real light and on camera before the wedding. Book it a few months ahead, once your dress is chosen, and bring inspiration photos, dress details, veil or accessories and a clean face. Trial pricing is on request.

A trial is the quiet rehearsal that makes the wedding morning feel easy. You see your look, change what you want to change and walk into the day knowing exactly what will happen in the mirror.

Why does a bridal hair and makeup trial matter?

A trial matters because it removes surprises. You test the makeup and hair in real light and on camera, so you can adjust colours, longevity and style before the wedding day.

Photographs and mirrors can tell different stories. As a wedding photographer since 2011, I know how colour, texture and light translate to pictures, so I often take test photos in daylight at the trial. A lip colour that looks soft indoors may read stronger outside, and a hair style that looks perfect standing may need more hold for dancing.

It also gives us time to get to know each other. A relaxed conversation about how you feel in your skin is the best preparation for a calm wedding morning.

When should I book my trial?

Book the trial a few months before the wedding, once your dress is chosen, and your hair length is roughly where you want it. Earlier is fine if you have your dress and veil; very close to the date leaves less room for changes.

  • Booking the artist: as soon as you have your date and venue, because dates fill up.
  • Consultation: soon after, to talk about the dress, the theme and the vibe.
  • Trial session: a few months ahead, when you can wear or bring your key details.
  • Final changes: a short message after the trial if you want to adjust anything.

What should I bring to my trial?

Bring inspiration photos, any dress details, your veil or hair accessories, and arrive with a clean, moisturised face and hair that is dry. If you wear earrings or a necklace, bring those too.

  1. Inspiration images: three to six photos of makeup and hair you love, plus one or two you dislike.
  2. Dress information: a photo, fabric swatch or the neckline, because it affects hair and makeup.
  3. Veil, tiara, pins or flowers: so we can test how they sit with your style.
  4. Jewellery: earrings and necklace if already chosen.
  5. A top that is easy to remove: something with a loose neck or buttons, so your hair is not disturbed.
  6. Your usual makeup habits: tell me what you wear daily and what you avoid.

What happens during the trial?

We begin with a chat, then I do your makeup and hair, check them in natural light and on camera and make changes together. You leave with a clear plan for the wedding morning.

  1. Conversation: your style, your dress, your venue and how long you want the look to last.
  2. Skin preparation and makeup: built in thin layers, with the look you chose.
  3. Hair: the style tested with your veil or accessories, and checked for hold.
  4. Real light and camera: we step by the window or outside and take photos.
  5. Notes: we write down shades, techniques and timings, so the wedding morning is smooth.

How do I make the most of the trial?

Be honest, say what you love and what feels wrong and look at the result in daylight. Small comments, like softer brows or a higher bun, are exactly what the trial is for.

  • Wear the trial look for a few hours if you can, to see how it feels and wears.
  • Send photos taken in different light to a friend or your partner for a second opinion.
  • Ask about timing, so we can plan how many hours are needed on the wedding morning.
  • Mention bridesmaids and family if you would like them styled too.

For ideas on how the day flows, see the wedding morning timeline.

What questions should I ask at the trial?

Ask anything that will make the wedding morning easier: timings, touch-ups, product choices and what to do if the weather changes. A good trial ends with answers, not just a pretty look.

  • How many hours do we need on the morning, and when should we start?
  • Which products help the look last through photographs, hugs and dancing?
  • What small touch-ups can I do myself, and what should be in my bag?
  • How will the style cope with wind, rain or a warm day? See wedding makeup and Danish weather.
  • Would an all-day touch-up service suit my schedule?

Is a trial worth it if my wedding is small or at City Hall?

Yes. Even for an elopement or a civil ceremony, a trial helps you feel certain about the look, and the photographs will last a lifetime. Small weddings often have just a few photographs that matter even more.

I work with brides at civil ceremonies, from Copenhagen City Hall and Frederiksberg Rådhus to quiet corners of Zealand. Read City Hall wedding hair and makeup and elopement makeup in Denmark for more.

How much is a trial, and how do I book?

The trial session is priced on request, because it depends on what you want to test. Bridal Makeup & Hair on the day is €300, as shown in the packages.
